Holding Absence – Penance (Track Of The Day, 27th June)

I don’t know who Holding Absence are, but having soaked up their track/video “Penance”, I now want to know all there is to know and I’m about to lose myself down a rabbit hole of this band that should clearly not be slept on. The brilliance of “Penance” is also why this new track is our Track Of The Day.

Cardiff based Holding Absence are Lucas Woodland (vocals), Feisal El-Khazragi (guitar), Giorgio Cantarutti (guitar), James Joseph (bass) and Ashley Green (drums). While not even a year old as a band, Holding Absence already seem to have a strong sound and confidence about them of a long-standing act. Clearly SharpTone Records saw something special in these guys too, as they signed them in February.

“Penance” is the track that caught my eye and poked deeply in the feels. This song is a sonic journey and we are taken along with it, delving into deep, dark, desperate and honest places. If you’re a feeler of music, you feel the weight of what is being shared.

“I wasted my time falling in love with the thought of falling in love with someone.
Am I killing time, or killing myself? I think I’m killing myself, sometimes.”

The weight is felt musically also, as are the wide open spaces and silence. This isn’t a song that’s just thrashed out. We’re given darkness and stillness too, and are asked to sit with it… before a light comes in and shares a beautiful resolution to this journey.

“I am enough to feel happiness and love.
It’s hard to say out loud, “I deserve to be happy now”.

I deserve to be happy now.”

An impressive goosebump-inspiring experience well worth seeing through to the end. Wow.
